QR Code for the homepage of the museum's exhibits information system [image info]
QR or Quick Response codes are the two-dimensional equivalent of barcodes. They are square, and can hold more information than standard barcodes.
The Museum's information system uses QR codes to identify individual cabinets and display areas. Most Museum cabinets are now tagged with a QR sticker, and anyone in the museum with an Android or Apple smartphone (and a QR reader app), or a BlackBerry (which has QR reading built-in), can in theory scan one of these stickers and be automatically redirected to a page that contains the current listings for that cabinet or area.
Public access wifi
Since mobile phone reception in much of the museum is poor or non-existent, we've now installed a public wifi access system that lets anyone with a wifi-capable device read this information though the museum's network, free of charge.
The QR code reader that we currently recommend is Google Goggles, and is available for free for both Android and iOS. It's available though the Google Play store and the Apple Store.
If you don't currently have Google Googgles already installed on your device, you can again download it for free in the museum, using our wifi connection.
