Card No. 09: The DE HAVILLAND "COMET" (Great Britain).
The "Comet" is a specially designed racing monoplane with a maximum speed of about 235 mph. The one illustrated was flown into the winning place in the England-Australia race by Messrs. Scott and Black. Three machines of this type built for the race smashed every previous record on the route; one of them also collected the record for the return flight. The "Comet" seats two, and there are duplicated controls. The petrol load is divided, some being carried in front of the cockpit and the remainder behind. Each engine is fitted with a variable pitch airscrew. (No. 9.)
