location: |
Arch Two , Area 22 1939 - 1941 |
A silver diecast model of the Maia Flying Boat G-ADHK, Dinky Toys 63a. The Maia was designed to be the first stage of the Mayo Composite Aircraft. The model was available either individually or as part of the Dinky Toys set number 63.
The original aircraft
The Short S.21 Maia flying boat was essentially an Empire Flying Boat with a few design modification to allow the connection of the S.20 Mercury to the centre of its upper wing, and modifications to its lower surface to allow it to take off with the increased weight-loading of the Mercury aircraft.
When not being used to lift the Mercury, Maia could be (and was) used as a conventional flying boat, until it was destroyed by enemy bombing in 1941.
