Mercury seaplane (Dinky Toys 63b)(i) |
location: |
Arch Two , Area 22 1939 - 1941 |
A silver diecast model of the Mercury Seaplane G-ADHJ, Dinky Toys 63b. The Mercury was the second stage of the Mayo Composite Aircraft. The model was available either individually or as part of the Dinky Toys set number 63.
The original aircraft
The Short S.20 Mercury seaplane was a four-engined seaplane with two floats, and a crew of two.
After the destruction of Maia in 1941, Mercury was briefly used as a temporary aircraft, for the recently-created 320 (Netherlands) Squadron RAF, but as a "one-off" aircraft, its use in wartime was not ideal, and Mercury was scrapped in 1941 when the squadron was issued with their proper planes.
