Strongbox toy moneybox (Chad Valley 10168) |
location: |
A black rectangular lithographed tinplate toy moneybox with red, black and gold stripes, marked "CHAD VALLEY / MADE IN ENGLAND / 10168"
Manufacture
The box would probably have been made for Chad Valley by Metal Box.
In the late 1930s, Metal Box absorbed Barringer, Wallis and Manners, who made a range of actual security boxes for businesses with exactly this styling (presumably using thicker metal sheet), as well as a lookalike toy moneybox range aimed at children, which was sold through Chad Valley with Chad Valley's mark.
Although Chad Valley later acquired their own metal fabrication facilities, the manufacturing of all or nearly all of their early metal toy ranges was outsourced to Metal Box, who also had a stock of useful designs inherited from BW&M.
