British Railways was formed in 1948, with the nationalisation of the "Big Four" railway companies.

The country's rail network had needed to be been run as a single network during World War Two, and after the War had effectively worn out much of the track and rolling stock, the idea of going back to the heady days of railway company competition that had existed in the 1930s no longer seemed either feasible or economically sound - post-war austerity meant that key services needed to be run "on a shoestring", and centralisation and rationalisation were the order of the day.

Under BR's management, the new locomotive running numbers had more digits, new loco classes were numbered instead of being given exotic names, and existing steam locos began to be phased out in favour of new diesels.

The organisation's name was shortened to "British Rail" in 1965.
