A "locomotive" is the "engine" that makes the train move, a "train" is a self-contained collection of rolling stock.
"Train" refers to a locomotive and the entire chain of attached carriages and other rolling stock. A "train" can also be a train ''service'' (e.g. "the 9:05 from Paddington"). Classic trains such as the [[Orient Express]] and [[Flying Scotsman]] ran with a range of different locomotives and rolling stock.
