Hornby Series was the branding applied to the model railway pieces and sets sold by Meccano Ltd. until the end of World War 2, with just about everything train-related that the company made being fixed with a high-profile red and gold Hornby Series sticker (or, during the 1920s, if space was tight, a small "MLDL" sticker, signifying "Meccano Ltd, Liverpool".

"Hornby Series" vs. "Hornby Trains"

There was a slight dual personality to the branding, depending on where you looked: while the manufactured goods proudly bore the stickers proclaiming them to be "Hornby Series" trains, the print advertising usually instead referred to the product range as Hornby Trains.

The beloved "Hornby Series" stickers also occasionally appeared on other isolated items that weren't train-related, such as the Meccano sawbench.

Tiering

The Hornby Series range followed the Meccano Outfits range in having different tiers of product: The No.1 locos were standard 0-4-0 engines based on the original Hornby Clockwork train, the No.2 locos were bigger with more wheels, and more numbers were added to the system as the the sophistication increased, along with enhanced "special" variants. Below No.1 was the No.0 loco (printed tinplate rather than enamelled), and there was also an entry-level M series tinplate range aimed at smaller children.
